چکیده

Background: In this study the longitudinal relationships between proactive / reactive aggression and autonomic nervous system (ANS) (re)activity were studied, as well as the moderating effect of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Methods: Delinquent males were assessed twice over a 5-year period in adolescence. We related self-reported proactive/ reactive aggression and PTSD symptoms to heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), measured at rest and in response to a public speaking task. results: In line with the polyvagal theory, a longitudinal relationship was observed between attenuated HRV reactivity (decreased vagal withdrawal) and proactive but not reactive aggression. PTSD symptoms was a moderating factor; the relationship between HRV reactivity and proactive aggression was only present at low levels of PTSD symptoms. Conclusions: This study adds to the advancing knowledge on distinctive neurobiological profiles underlying subtypes of aggression. 21536_marjan_de_vries_080212.indd 92 09-02-12 12:51 93 longitudinal relationships between Ans and aggression

Being hot-tempered: autonomic, emotional, and behavioral distinctions between childhood reactive and proactive aggression.

Reactive aggression (RA) is an angry response to perceived provocation. Proactive aggression (PA) is a pre-meditated act used to achieve some goal. This study test hypotheses that (1) individuals high in RA and PA will differ in resting levels of autonomic arousal and (2) RA will be related to emotional and behavioral problems, while PA only to behavioral problems. Parents of 68 children (age 6...

The predictive value of stress-related neurobiological parameters for disruptive behaviors after 5-year follow-up in delinquent male adolescents

Background: A small number of longitudinal studies on the predictive value of stressrelated neurobiological parameters for several measures of future disruptive behavior, have revealed promising results. We assessed the predictive value of heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV) and cortisol for future rule-breaking behavior and reactive and proactive aggression, taking into account disruptive...

Comparison of the Effectiveness of Emotional and Social related on the Reduction of Aggression Symptoms in Delinquent Adolescents Boy in North Khorasan and Razavi Provinces

Introduction: Training based on emotional regulation and social skills strategies is one of the most important factors in the desirable growth of the personality of delinquent adolescents. The present study aims to compare the education based on emotional regulation strategies with social correlational education in reducing the aggression symptoms in delinquent adolescents. North Khorasan and R...

Associations Between Resting Heart Rate and Antisocial Behavior

Studies testing the relationship between autonomic nervous system function as indexed by low resting heart rate and antisocial behavior have found that low resting heart rate is positively correlated with a wide range of antisocial behavior measures. The aim of this review was to assess the influence of heart rate (HR) level and HR variability (HRV) on the relationship between behavioral variab...

Media exposure and sympathetic nervous system reactivity predict PTSD symptoms after the Boston marathon bombings.

BACKGROUND Terrorist attacks have been shown to precipitate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology in children and adolescents, particularly among youths with high exposure to media coverage surrounding such events. Media exposure may be particularly likely to trigger PTSD symptoms in youths with high physiological reactivity to stress or with prior psychopathology or exposure to v...
